Chapter One.

Bonny was swimming close to the bottom of the pond, over the silt beds between the reeds that covered the other half of the pond. As he swam little swirls of silt would lift off the bottom leaving a trail of silt swirling behind him. Bonny was on the look out for his big brother Dingo, as they were engaged in the game of Rollem and Bowlem.

Dingo had gone out to hide while the other brothers held Bonny back until they thought he was well hidden. Then Bonny was released to hunt down his brother and find him before Dingo could jump out and turn Bonny over onto his back and claim victory. Dingo had slowly sunk himself in the silt, without raising a cloud of silt to announce his position, leaving only his eyes above the silt so he could spot Bonny coming before Bonny could see him.

Bonny was swimming more slowly now as he saw his other brothers in the reeds, depicting that somewhere close in hiding was his brother Dingo. So as he turned his head to look up at anything that could hide his brother, he looked to his left and then to his right. He would circle around too see if he was sneaking up from behind, but failed to see the two eyes watching him as he swam closer. When he was almost on top of Dingo, Dingo closed his eyes to the narrowest of slits, so that Bonny couldn’t see the whites of his eyes in the silt bed.

AS Bonny’s body cast a shadow onto the two eyes watching him, it was time for Dingo to spring his trap. With a great burst of silt he made his grab for Bonny, still hidden in the cloud of silt all vanished before his eyes. He struck out and caught Bonny in his steel like grip.

But Bonny was very agile at the first sign of trouble he turned over so his feet were facing the surface of the pond. He knew that Dingo now had to turn him around before he could slam him into the silt bed to claim victory. But Bonny had played this part before and had lost, but each time he was stronger and was able to hold Dingo at bay.

Dingo was getting angry at his brothers futile attempts to stop his victory. So under the cover of the silt cloud he punched and nipped in a vain hope of getting him to submit. But Bonny fought on, as they now swam higher in the water the silt no longer hid them from view.

The other’s called to Bonny to encourage him to fight on, as they knew how plucky Bonny was, and wouldn’t go down without trying something to stop Dingo from winning. With Dingo on his back he drove him into the silt so he could hardly breathe through his gills. He felt his grip loosen and tried too break free, But dingo felt him slip from his grasp and held on more firmly than ever. He was not going to lose this time or ever. As he’d not been bested by any of his brothers or friends in the past, so he was more determined to win now than ever before. Especially to his little runt of a brother that had the attentions of a female newt he so sorely wanted as his own. He would do anything to be rid of Bonny so he could court this female called Tally.

Slowly Dingo was able to turn Bonny so he faced him and would be able to claim victory by slamming him onto his back as the final act in this little game. But this was not to be the finish as Bonny submitted to his older brother. Dingoes put his hands over Bonny’s mouth too stifle his cry for mercy. As he drove his fingers deeper into the flesh to make Bonny cry out in pain. As he heard Bonny cry for mercy he felt the blood rush to his entire body as the warm glow of power crept over his body. He was now getting to enjoy the power he had over his younger brother.

His final act before he accepted his brothers submission was to reach down to open the vent that covered his private parts, exposing them too all that witnessing his power play over his sibling rival in the art of love. None of the others were aware of his plans to disgrace Bonny in the eyes of Tally so he could take his place by her side. Even now as he was rendered the victor he looked to see if he had weakened her desires for such a weak being. His anger rose a bit more when he saw her run her hands down the entire length of his crest. He turned to two of his other brothers that supported him in his bid too be leader. “I want him got rid of, will you help?” said Dingo. But both brothers shrank away as he insisted on their help. For both of them feared Dingo as he talked of killing Bonny before. They both knew it was against newt law to take another newts life.

Now lets go back right to the beginning where all things were simple and tranquil, it was in the spring of 1959, near a Town called Halesworth in Suffolk. There was a pond, which was referred to as the newt pond. it was the back way to Wissett from Halesworth through the road called Mount pleasant. Past a row of garages down the hill and turn left, you now have left the built up area and are now in the country. Carry on down the road and you’ll come to a railway crossing. To the left you would see the railway station through the valley formed by two very high embankments of grass, until you reach the bridge that crossed over the valley allowing cars and the land transport of the humans to cross without being any trouble to the trains that travelled along the tracks. these four steel ribbons allowed trains to run smoothly across the land from north to the south. Then at the crossing you pass over the track on the wooden boards set between the tracks to allow passing traffic to cross the four steel ribbons, without getting stuck in the railway lines. Once over this you travel a little further until you come to a five bared gate on your right. You climb onto the gate and there she sits this pond of life to a host of water creatures, like the frogs, the stickleback fish, water boatmen, and dragonfly’s also the humble newt. The female newt looks just like a small lizard but can live on land as well as in water, unlike the lizard that is land bound. The male newt are like small dragons, because of the crest that runs down the entire length of its back and tail.

There were two newts guarding a channel of eggs already to hatch out at any moment now. The male had been chased off at this point. These males would congregate at the ponds edge and tell stories, about their daring deeds they had done while away at the winter sleep. The frogspawn was moving and throbbing from the young tadpoles trying to escape the jelly that surround them. Due to the warmth of the sun the business of rearing the young was honing up there already were a few sticklebacks swimming around, flexing their four spines on their backs as the swam past where Jo-anne and her mate Digger had lain their eggs.
