Summer’s Day

By

Gilly

Synopsis

My novel is a romance about a single parent, with two children called Sammy-Jo, who is thirteen and Jamie who is eight.

They move away from a past of physical and emotional abuse. They move into their new home, in Dorset where Summer finds a job as a chambermaid in a hotel. She meets a man called Marc, the hotelier, and everything is great for a while until Summer’s past comes  back to haunt her.

Will she? Won’t she? Go back to her ex-boyfriend who is unreliable, irresponsible, never any money and loves his drink more than anyone or anything, but so unpredictable, which Summer likes.

Or will she stay with Marc? Who is kind, honest, responsible, hard working and has a good job and yes, very predictable but who really does love her.

Chapter Eleven

It was two weeks before Christmas and hectic at the hotel.  Summer has to do all the preparations as her family were coming to stay, and she wanted it to be perfect.

Sue, her neighbour had had her baby, it was little girl, they named her, Belle. It suited her as she was a pretty little girl with lots of blonde curls and big blue eyes.  She looked just like Sue. She had been born on the 12th of December, two days after her due date and  everything went well.  Sue was home with Belle and settling in.

“Mum, it’s my nativity today, you will be there won’t you?” Jamie asked excitedly, he was a shepherd and Summer had made his outfit.

“Of course I will sweetheart, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Summer replied. ”Marc will be there as well, he’s taking time off work especially,” Summer added reassuringly.

“You’ll look like a wally.” Sammy said, winding him up.

“Shut up fatso” Jamie shouted angrily at her. They started fighting.

“Ok, that’s enough, you’ll be late for school.  Come on, time to go” Summer shouted, fed up with their constant bickering.

Summer met Marc at the hotel, “Hi darling, you look worn out,” Marc said looking concerned.

“I am a bit, getting all the shopping and present buying for everyone.”

“I can give you a hand at the weekend, if you like,” Marc replied.

“It’s alright, I’m just about finished.” Summer said.

“Shall we have a quick drink before we go, so I can unwind a bit before we go to Jamie’s play?” Summer asked Marc.

“Sure, I’ll get us a couple of coffees and a sandwich.”  Marc called one of his staff over to get their order.  After they had finished they were just about to leave, when Summer caught a glimpse of someone who looked just like Paul from the back.  He was sat at the bar on his own, Summers heart leapt and she felt she couldn’t breathe she was all of a fluster.

“What’s up babe, you look like you’ve seen a ghost, are you ok?” Marc asked full of concern.

“I don’t know, I think I’m just tired, I’ll be alright,” Summer replied.

“Are you up to Jamie’s nativity play?” Marc was worried.

“Oh yes, I can’t let Jamie down.” Summer replied.

They sat down and watched the play, but Summer’s mind wasn’t on it, however much she tried to put it out of her mind, she couldn’t forget what she had seen.

It was a week before Christmas, Marc was very busy at the hotel, Sammy-Jo and Jamie had broken up from school and Summer was rushing about getting last minute presents, decorations etc.

“Sammy-Jo ,can you look after Jamie, I have to do some last minute shopping, it’ll be easier on my own, I won’t be too long sweetheart,” Summer kissed them both goodbye and walked to the town centre, she wanted a bit of time to herself, to recollect her thoughts.

She kept thinking about Paul, and wanted to know if he had come to find her, it couldn’t be a coincidence she wanted to know who had told him where they were, but I don’t suppose it’s that hard to find someone if your heart is set on it.

She decided to walk down to the beach, and have a breather before her shopping trip, the beach was only a ten minute walk from the shops.

As she crossed the road, she saw him stood looking around, she tried to hurry into the nearest shop, so he wouldn’t see her. When she thought it was all clear she hurried down to the beach, she couldn’t deal with this.

It was very cold as she walked along the seafront, but Summer was well wrapped up in a sheepskin coat, hat and gloves, it seemed funny to see the beach deserted.

She sat down, enjoying the peace and quiet thinking she was all alone, and then, “Summer” a familiar voice called out. She knew who it was before she turned around.

She hadn’t been mistaken, that day at the hotel, he must have seen her in the town and followed her.

“Paul, what are you doing here?” Summer asked.

“I came to see you, I love you Summer.”

“It’s a bit late now. I’ve moved on now, I’ve met someone else.”

Paul looked heartbroken. “We could have worked it out,” Paul replied

“I’ve given you enough chances, please don’t do this to me. I’m happy and so are Sammy-Jo and Jamie, can’t you leave us alone.” Summer shouted at him.

“No I can’t do that. I’ll never let you go. Can we talk?” Paul pleaded.

“How did you find us?” Summer asked.

“I have my sources,“ Paul replied.
