The Power of Being

by

Martinella Brooks

Synopsis

On the death of her son under suspicious circumstances, a mother is convinced that spurious statements made to the police by the people who were with him the night he died, resulted in an ‘accidental death’ verdict. Her determination to seek revenge is thwarted when she has a fall and is carried off by an Angel and taken on a journey beyond the veil of death, during which she is guided by several other Angels until she is faced by the ghostly apparition of her son, who tells her that she was right, he had been murdered, but that she must stop seeking revenge and be patient because revenge was already on its way.

Suffering from amnesia after her fall, she experiences flashbacks, until she has total recall, which tells her that not only is there existence after death but how strong,  both in the physical and spiritual the power of being can be.

CHAPTER ONE

PART OF OPENING PAGE

Upon waking I couldn’t immediately recall having fallen asleep, almost everything around me was white, and I could hear the sound of muffled voices and the clatter of tin on tin, but. it was the curtain surrounding the bed I lay on that told me I was in hospital.

“How the hell did I end up here?” I asked myself as the curtains were suddenly pulled back with a Whoosh! making me start.

“Well now” said a nurse who immediately busied herself by fluffing up my pillows. “Glad to see you awake at last.”

“What do you mean, at last” I asked pushing myself further up in the bed, a sharp pain in my head making me wince. “Just how long have I been here?”

“You bad a fall dear.” she replied, checking the notes that hung on a clipboard at the bottom of the bed. “Banged your head, you’ve been out since they brought you in just before two this morning. Don’t you remember?”

“Perhaps I’ve got amnesia or something as sinister because I can’t remember a thing.” I replied. “As you say, falling. how I got here.....nothing. Everything’s a fuzz.”

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 1 PAGE 8

“What are you doing here?” he asked, suddenly stepping out of the light, and I was struck with a mental awareness that I immediately recognised as yet another new experience. His eyes were wide and striking, there was an emotion of a kind flowing from his persona; which I was unable to fathom, and for a flickering moment I wondered if this was the ‘MAN’ But it was the tone of his voice that told me he was not.

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER I  PAGE 6

I knew that I faced, a challenge getting down from the flat unscathed, but if I wasn’t to remain there until the sun came up I had to make a move. A braver person than I would have just gone for it. However, being afraid of heights I had to strive for the courage to slip down into the darkness. I don’t know how long I sat there before inching my body over the edge of the rim, trying to gain a foothold as I went. By the time I had managed to ease myself about a third of the way down I thought that I was going to make it. It wasn’t to be however, because my foothold was lost to me, my body wobbled into an uncontrollable mass, and as I hurtled towards the ground I frantically tried to tread air; then suddenly the Angel was there wrapping her wings around me.

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 3  PAGE 35

After reassuring me that I was not hallucinating he went on to explain that more and more people were experiencing encounters with lost loved ones. That the dimensions were slowly merging, and that the veil between the living and those who had passed was thinning; that contact was happening much more often. People were beginning to realise that the existence and continuation of ‘the soul and spirit after death is more than likely, and in doing so come to the conclusion that there is more to life and the power of being than our earthly existence….
