Charlie’s Tale of Chocolate Dreams

The sun was creeping up into the summer sky on a warm Friday morning, pouring its light into a quaint house in Pine Green which nestled on the banks of the River Stour. All was quiet inside, mainly because one of the two young men of the family hadn't stirred from under his duvet yet. Charlie the elder of the two boys had been dreaming of his favourite thing in all the world, CHOCOLATE. Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate even a mixture of all three, he didn't mind at all. Easter egg chocolate, Advent Calendar chocolate, even drinking chocolate, it was all    delicious and had to be consumed as quickly as possible. Mainly before his mom, Tara, caught him and made him stop, before he burst like a big cocoa balloon.

Charlie's eyes blearily opened to greet the new day, on his face he wore a little smile thinking of the dream he had awoken from. OH why isn’t the whole world made of chocolate he thought, instead of broccoli, spinach and other nasty things, life would be just perfect.

The sun by now was streaming through the cracks in the curtains lighting up the bedroom on the front of the house he called home. He glanced over to his younger brother Archie who was still sleeping soundly and thought, I bet he didn't have as good a dream as I did last night, nothing beats a chocolate dream, not anything ever. He probably dreamt of being a worm or spider. Archie was a bit like that, he liked weird things, especially frogs or newts or anything slimy. Charlie thought he'd better get up before his mom starts shouting, "Come on Charlie it's time to get ready for school". Why isn’t it Saturday he thought, then I could go back to sleep and dream of more and more chocolate.Lovely.  Treading wearily down the stairs he hoped there were some Coco Pops left, his favourite cereal of all and of course the right flavour. Having got a dish, a large one, Charlie made his way across the kitchen to the cereal cupboard imagining a large box of Coco Pops waiting there. “Oh no,” he gasped, the cupboard was bare apart from a box of boring Cornflakes. UGH!! He thought, how do people eat these everyday, it might not be so bad if they made chocolate sugar to sprinkle on them, I could live with Cornflakes then. Charlie tipped the flakes into his bowl with little enthusiasm and went to the fridge for the milk to pour over them. Picking up a spoon he walked into the living room. There lay Becksy the dog, a ten year brindle cross who loved Charlie as much as Charlie loved him. He turned his head sleepily to Charlie and wagged his tail as if to say good morning. Charlie said "Good morning Becks, and how are you today". The dog just wagged his tail a couple of times then plonked his head back down for another snooze.Charlie turned his head away from Becks and looked down at the heap of Cornflakes in his bowl and wished really hard, with closed eyes, that maybe, just maybe they'd turn to chocolate. Opening his eyes slowly Charlie squinted at the bowl of flakes in his hand. To his astonishment there before him were chocolate coloured Cornflakes. Not believing his own eyes Charlie took a spoonful and put them in his mouth. Oh the flavour, delicious, creamy and totally  brilliant. How could that happen he thought, am I dreaming again?
Charlie knew he wasn’t dreaming when he heard his mom Tara say "Come on Charlie for Gods sake, you're going to be late for school at this rate, hurry up and get your uniform on, pronto"!!  He hurriedly wolfed down his Cornflakes or chocolate flakes as they now were, still puzzled at the change in his breakfast…
