SELF PUBLISH You should be aware that whilst many self-publishing houses are reputable, some are not and prey upon eager newcomers. We have learned of new writers, many with little knowledge of the literary world, sending their precious work to various houses to be told that, their work is very good and deserves to be published. Music indeed to the ears of the new writer anxious to see his work in print. He or she is then told that the publisher is willing to go forward and publish - and would the author consider paying something towards the cost of production? There have been cases where unscrupulous publishers have encouraged new writers to order far more books to be printed that is likely to sell. The result is that the unfortunate author has ended up with hundreds of books in his garage and his bank balance reduced by thousands of pounds. It should not be forgotten that you will be expected to market and actually deliver your work to book-shops, many of whom will only take your books on a sale-or-return basis. The best way to make money from writing is to do what many professional writers do, find out what genre is in demand, then write it to the best of your ability and send it an agent or publisher that deals with your subject. THE GOOD SIDE OF SELF-PUBLISHING. For those whose writing is highly specialised and only a few copies will be required then self-publishing may be a good option. In this case you are really only seeking someone to print your work, so shop around and try to get the best terms you can. |
