Synopsis Three girls' share a flat in London. They also share much else namely each others secrets. Ruth, Sarah and Bella. Ruth is engaged to the marketing magnet called Olive. Sarah is single and Bella is trying to break it off with an estate agent called Nick. All their world is turned upside down when who should turn up but Alma Charles. She was their enemy from their comprehensive days', she was also the one person most of the girls' at school looked up to. She was last seen leaving London for Manchester to study marketing, (her and Clive should get on well together.) Yet Ruth is resolved that Clive and her will never meet. The two girls' are trying to get Ruth to treat Olive a little more civilly. Ruth sometimes treats him like a doormat. Bella is trying to let Nick down gently but it doesn't seem to be sinking in. "Are you going shopping today or not?" demanded a rather irrational Sarah. "Okay give me five minutes." I screamed back. Ruth had just finished applying her make up, she was also wearing her Gucci top and carrying her Prada handbag.Sarah hadn't surfaced yet. I was outside on a freezing November morning trying to get my old Beetle to go. Ruth demanded we go in a taxi. Who should pull up alongside but loveable old Clive. "Can I give someone a lift?" he asked rather gently. Already I could see Ruth going redder by the minute. "Clive I thought we'd agreed you were to pick me up at eight tonight." she was half hanging in his jeep. "Well I just happened to be in the area." he said rather absentmindedly. "I could do with a hand" I ejected. "No we are going in a taxi." Ruth retorted. "What's all the noise about?" declared a rather sleepy Sarah who had come to the front door in her dressing gown. The taxi appeared and Ruth and I disappeared into it. I don't know what Ruth said to Clive but he simply drove off into the misty November morning. I decided to go home to my parents' for Xmas. Mum was baking mince pies'. I could smell them all along the way from the front door. Sarah was going home too and Ruth was spending it with Nick. I ate that much at Xmas I thought I was going to explode. Dad was just the same as always. I bought him some Old Spice aftershave and talking of spice I bought my young sister Elle a couple of spice girl CD's. Mum was in her element, ordering everyone around and trying to get me fixed up with the young fella next door. On Xmas eve I went to Church with dad it was really special I thought. Mum was home stuffing the turkey. Next day we had turkey with all the trimmings. Then there was the queen's speech, after that Dad just fell asleep in front of the t.v. Mum had invited the lad next door in for some turkey sandwiches. He looked like he needed some stuffing. He appeared to be about nine stone. He just smiled and thanked mum for inviting himself. He looked like a lizard. He looked like the character in Maeve Binchey's novel Circle Of Friends', the one who fancied Minnie Driver. I wasn't being mean but I found him repulsive. Chapter 3 The fella from the flat above was walking his dog outside on this cold December day. I think he lived with an Asian girl, very pretty she was too. I was just peeking through the curtains so I decided to get up properly. I yawned and went to the fridge to see what there was for breakfast. I opened the fridge door there was only butter and some milk. I decided to go to the nearest shop for some things. Who should I see at the local shop but Abbey, I was only half awake and only just thrown a coat over my nightdress. I had no makeup on and beside her if I wasn't wrong was the Greek God Adonis himself namely Ben. "Bella is that you, I never would have guessed." she smirked to herself. "Yes I just popped out for as few things." all the blood rushed to my face. "There's nothing in our fridge so I just popped out for some breakfast." I said rather in a dismay sort of way. "I bet she ate most of it." I heard her whisper to Ben. I just caught sight of Sarah as she was leaving for somewhere, though I didn't know quite where, as it was a Saturday. Sarah didn't work Saturday's. She shouted that she'd see me about 7 o'clock tonight if I wasn't doing much. I cooked myself a full English Breakfast and fell nearly asleep until the doorbell awoke me. It was none other than Nick looking Ruth. It wasn't have occurred to her to tell him about the Team Building weekend. I told him and he said she must have forgot. I thought to myself if it was Ben she wouldn't have forgot. With that he was gone down the steps and into his awaiting car. It seemed that my body was just one big hair sprouting machine. I expected to wrinkle as I got older, I expected my skin to be not so taut. Yet my body was far too hairy for my liking. I had applied hot wax to my legs and along my bikini line and Sarah was going to rip it off for me. I let one squeal out of me that I'm sure the entire street had heard. Sarah said she was sorry but I didn't know how I was going to continue with the rest of it. It simply was far too painful. I let Sarah do her worse and I just continued to scream each scream more precise than the last one. When it was over I decided to have a hot soak, this time no jasmine candles. I had noticed lately, between my breasts, a few renegade hairs growing longer darker and thicker than the rest but I kept it to myself. There was no way anybody was getting hot wax between my ample sized breasts. I had a good long soak, yet my skin still appeared bright pink like a new born baby. The stinging sensation had started to relax a little. I just lay there and dreamed of being somewhere foreign with Ben the Creek Cod as my ideal partner. Yet the doorbell rang and brought me back to my senses again. It was Nick lovable old Nick looking Ruth. You would have thought she would have told him about the team building week--end. Yet that just about summed up their relationship. Ruth returned at lunch time. She had forgot her mobile. She was in a hurry. "Don't you want some lunch?" I asked her gently. "No I'm searching for my mobile, you haven't seen it have you?' she ejected. "No I haven't" "Why aren't you at work today, if you don't mind me asking?" she opening her mouth like a goldfish. "No I took the day off today." "What about yourself, are you off this afternoon?" "No I'm out on my lunch break." "There it was all the time." It was behind the cushion on the sofa. "What did you think of Ben then?" Ruth demanded an answer. All I could think of was to say he was nice. Which was the understatement of the year. He was simply God's gift to women. Perhaps though he had bad breath or something human, not like the Greek God he appeared to be. "Nice. You thought he was nice, Bella he was simply adorable. Trust Abbey to get her claws into him!" Just with that she squirked Chanel No 5 and slammed the front door behind her. "Why don't we do lunch sometime?" asked Abbey in her mock American accent. "I'd love to." waved Ruth, who had apparently forgotten about Nick for a moment. "Please bring along your intended." sighed Ruth who couldn't take her eyes off Adonis. "Oh please I almost forgot myself, please let me introduce Ben." said Abbey. This time she had forgot her American accent. Sarah and I just managed to control ourselves. We ended the day by watching Ruth do some damage to her credit card, firstly Prada then Gucci. We returned home exhausted, yet all of us wishing we had what Abbey Price had a Greek Adonis and a job in PR. I was just a secretary and Sarah a bank clerk, while Ruth was an estate agent... |
