Animal Nonsense

by

Derek Rossitter

Animal Nonsense is a collection of thirty short comic and off-beat rhymes by Derek Rossitter, each with moral or quasi-moral conclusions, principally written for children aged four to eleven, although much  older people would certainly enjoy them.  Each rhyme is accompanied by two delightful illustrations by Grace Horne, a very well regarded English Artist.  Unfortunately it is not possible to reproduce her illustrations for the Showcase.

Given here is an example of one of Derek's verses and a complete list of the titles of the others.

The Beaver and the Skunk

A beaver was sunning himself on the bank,

When a skunk went past - driving a tank.

The beaver - enjoying the weather so balmy,

Was impressed to observe a skunk in the army.

"I'll ask him to come and live with me!

Just think how safe I then shall be!"

The skunk was delighted to accede to his wish,

And both settled down to tomatoes and fish

Washed down by some wine,

(Made from grapes from a vine).

This latter, however, was bad for the skunk

Who proceeded to be unpleasantly drunk.

"I'm afraid that I'm not terribly well!"

(Indeed he had made a horrible smell.)

So don't set out to make new friends

Just to suit ulterior ends.
